Versatile, creative major

Do you like creating things with your hands? Do you want to further develop your creativity and take it to a new level? At Crafts Create - Barcelona you will have the opportunity to develop yourself and your abilities in many different creative areas, and learn many new techniques and methods, in scenic surroundings.

Varied and exciting teaching

Do you like sewing better than drawing, or maybe you're already a stickler for woodcarving? Regardless of what you are best at or which creative activity you prefer, your level of experience does not matter when applying for this major. We adapt the teaching to each individual student's needs and area of ​​interest. Throughout the year, you will get a taste of many different techniques together with the class, but what you delve into and spend the most time on is to a certain extent up to you.

Tours and excursions

We sometimes go out into nature to find materials, inspiration and to build the community in the class. We don't go on demanding hikes, but still very nice and preferably with great views and play of colors. Autumn colors in the forest, a seven-stone stove on the shore or an idyllic sunset on beautiful Runde. We also travel on excursions to exhibitions and art festivals. Among other things, we visit the Nordic light festival of photography in Kristiansund. We are also traveling to the art city of Barcelona in February. Here there is much to see, experience and be inspired by.

Teacher: Ruth Marie Rassmussen

Ruth Marie is a qualified art and craft teacher, with specialization in woodwork. She also has a journeyman's certificate in woodcarving. In addition to various shaping activities, she is fond of sports and outdoor life and preferably with a creative twist! Like river walks, bathtub paddling and birthday parties in the mountains. Mainly teaches drawing, painting, woodwork and takes you on exciting excursions!

Equipment

The school has a lot of great equipment and facilities for most types of creative work. We have, among other things, a drawing room, a drawing room and a sewing room.

You do not need any separate crafting equipment for this major, but as we will also be part of the trip, you will need simple hiking equipment such as warm clothes, rucksack and sleeping bag. You can buy hiking equipment at a discount when you get to school.

Costs

27.000,- NOK includes all the activities in class, also the study trip to Barcelona and most of the materials you use.

If by any chance the coronavirus situation make us have an alternative plan inside Norway - the cost of this course will be significantly less.

The major suits anyone who wants to try something new in creative techniques and appreciates the aesthetics of nature. If you want to have a creative year with varied crafting activities, this is the major for you!

Redesign and stitching

During the year you will learn stitching and redesign techniques. Among other things, we have several overlock machines at school, and you will learn how to use them. You will also learn how to sew clothes, make simple accessories and repair worn clothes. We focus on reusing and sustainability, and sew new fashionable garments including bedding, woollen blankets, curtains and tablecloths from old reusable fabrics.

Knitting and crocheting

The knitting trend has really taken off in recent years, and we spend a lot of time on knitting, felting and crocheting. You learn basic techniques in these needlework activities, and we also felt sheep's wool seat pads.

Woodworking and sweeping

Do you know what sweeping is? If not, you will at least know it after a year at Høgtun. This is one of the many woodworking techniques you will learn and explore. During the year you will also have the opportunity to make your own knife. It may sound complicated, but with expert guidance from good teachers, you will create something that you will be proud of.

Your major at Nordvestlandet folkehøgskole will be taught three days of the week. You will also attend the Learning norwegian class. In addition you can choose some electives. Read more about our electives here.

Photography, watercolour and acrylic paints

You will learn basic techniques related to acrylic painting and watercolor painting. After the school year, you will be able to present fine, self-composed works. In addition to painting on canvas, we also have some focus on photography.

Jewelry design and other crafts

You will also learn how to make Viking jewelry from scratch, according to old, new or self-composed patterns. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn how to make beautiful glass jewelry. Do you have experience with jewelry design from before? In class we are always eager to learn new techniques and would like to share your ideas and knowledge with the rest of the class.

Nature experiences and tours

Nordvestlandet folkehøgskole is located in one of the most beautiful nature areas in the Northwest region of Norway, and offers nearby outdoor activities right outside the school gate. We will therefore also spend time outdoors. We use a lot of natural materials in our projects, and get inspired by what we find on trips. You can look forward to pizza-making on a seven stone stove on the shoreline, mountain hikes, cabin trips, Nordic Light Photo Festival, skiing and other winter activities.

Skiing week in Oppdal

In February the whole school will travel to the Oppdal ski resort. We are going to live in cabins at IMI-Stølen which has a lot of good facilities and cosy rooms!

Here we will have a good time skiing and relaxing in the cabins afterwards. A lot of proficient instructors will accompany us and you will receive lessons to suit your skiing level. We offer classes in alpine and telemark skiing as well as snowboarding and cross country skiing.
