Questions and answers

Here are answers to common questions from international students.

Contact us
  • A typical week consists of many different activities. You have classes in your main field, as well as electives. In addition, there are common activities such as morning assemblies, seminars, student-led evening programs and of course free time to hang out with friends, explore the local area or just relax. Weekends often consist of a mix of planned school activities, trips or your own experiences.

  • You can find the specific prices for each line on our "Prices" page. The tuition fee covers:

    • Teaching and materials

    • Boarding house (your room)

    • All meals, every day of the week

    • All trips and excursions that belong to your main line, including trips abroad

Additional costs will include travel to and from school, private expenses, any optional weekend trips, and fees for some elective courses.

  • Yes, it is very important that all international students have valid insurance for the entire school year. This should cover medical treatment, accidents, and travel/belongings.

    • Students from the EU/EEA should bring a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

    • Students from countries outside the EU/EEA must arrange private health and travel insurance that is valid throughout their stay in Norway.

  • Norway has varied weather, and our school emphasizes outdoor activities! You should bring:

    • Warm and wind/waterproof clothing (jacket and pants)

    • Wool underwear and wool sweaters

    • Good hiking shoes

    • Everyday clothes for school life

    • Workout clothes for sports and activities

    • A nice outfit for party dinners and celebrations

    • Something typical from your home country to share with others (a flag, a game, a snack)

A detailed packing list will be sent to you on the website before school starts. There is also an equipment list for the different lines on the line pages.

  • The school is beautifully situated in Torvik, on the northwest coast of Norway, surrounded by spectacular fjords, islands and mountains. The easiest way to get here is to fly to Ålesund Airport, Vigra (AES). From the airport there are buses to the school. We send detailed travel information before the school starts and help coordinate arrivals.

  • The area is perfect for nature lovers! You have direct access to great opportunities for hiking, climbing, kayaking and skiing. It is a relatively small community, which provides a safe and peaceful environment where you can really focus on your year and build strong relationships with other students. It is the perfect place to experience true Norwegian outdoor life .

  • A Norwegian folk high school is a unique one-year boarding school without academic exams or grades. It is not a university. The focus is on lifelong learning, personal development, community and exploring subjects you are passionate about. It is a fantastic opportunity to develop new skills, make friends from all over the world and experience Norwegian culture in a supportive environment.

  • Our school is for everyone! You must be at least 18 years old and motivated to participate in the community. Although the school is based on Christian values, we welcome students from all backgrounds and faiths. We emphasize an environment characterized by openness and respect. The most important thing is that you are curious, willing to learn and ready to become part of a close community.

  • The main language of instruction is Norwegian. However, many of the staff and most Norwegian students speak good English and are happy to help translate and include you. A year at the school is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the Norwegian language and learn it naturally. We find that international students usually pick up the language quickly by participating in everyday life and activities. Simple information can be provided in English if needed.

  • No, we have no academic requirements. We do not ask for grades or diplomas. Admission is based on your motivation and your personal interest in attending school and contributing to the community. Tell us why you want to spend a year with us in your application!

  • You apply directly via the application form on our website. We have a "rolling admissions" system, which means that we accept students until the school is full. For international students who need a visa (study permit), we still recommend applying as early as possible, preferably before April 1. The visa process can take several months.

  • Yes. Once you have been accepted and paid the deposit, we will send you an official admission letter. You will need this to apply for a study permit to Norway. The application process itself is your responsibility, and we recommend visiting the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for detailed instructions. Start the process as soon as you have been accepted.

  • You will live in the school's dormitory. Most people live in a double room and share it with another student - a great way to meet people and make friends! We have a limited number of single rooms that you can apply for at an additional cost.

  • Yes, all meals are included in the school fees! The kitchen serves four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. Meals are important social gathering points for the whole school. We can accommodate most common allergies and diets – just let us know in your application.
